During his ’68 Comeback Special, Elvis alludes to the fact that rock ‘n roll, the music he helped usher in, is essentially just a blend of gospel and rhythm and blues. I Believe: The Gospel Masters is a collection that highlights the gospel side of Presley’s nature with big aplomb. It’s here that we hear the heart of Elvis and get a full and complete taste of his gospel-flavored catalog.
This is clearly not the first collection of Presley’s gospel work to hit the market but it is clearly the most complete. This collection features all of the artist’s four gospel/inspirational works, Peace in the Valley, His Hand in Mine, How Great Thou Art, and He Touched Me, as well as offering up tracks from film and live recordings as well. The comprehensive nature of this collection alone makes it a must have for Presley fans and collectors but for music buffs, there’s much to be gathered as well.
Spread across the four discs are a stunning collection of classic gospel songs, from the inspirational “I Believe,” the quartet stylings of “Run On,” and classic hymns like “How Great Thou Art” and “In The Garden.” These songs come across with a timelessness simply due to the nature of the work. Presley’s vocals and arrangements continue to stand the test of time and please the ear nicely.
Looking across the expanse of the albums also allows listeners a look into the maturity of the artist as well. From the old quartet flavors of His Hand in Mine, where Elvis offered props to his legends like Jake Hess and The Blackwood Brothers, keen listeners will note the subtle shifts leading toward How Great Thou Art and He Touched Me. The journey is an interesting one, listening to the shifts in arrangement and tone of the Presley’s voice as he ages and matures.
Yet the real highlight here is the inclusion of the live and bonus tracks from The King’s movies and concerts, as well as home recordings. It’s here, particularly on the live and home recordings that Presley’s real passion seems to come forth. When Presley lends his charisma to the live take of “How Great Thou Art” accompanied by The Stamps Quartet, it’s simply magic. Likewise for more upbeat tracks like “I, John” and “You Better Run.” Here we just find Elvis in his element, jamming and enjoying himself. However, one cannot overlook the keen intimacy and power that is found on two tracks, “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus/Nearer My God to Thee” and “Oh, How I Love Jesus.” Here we hear Elvis Presley unfettered, not worried about any audience or any crowd. This is Elvis at his best.
For fans, collectors, or those in search of a unique musical journey, this collection is a sure bet. It’s got everything you could ask for, history, passion, and power. And throughout it all is the heart of the King.
