It’s all here. Every last bit of it. Thirty songs spanning two discs running 180 minutes in total listening time. Those are the stats of the latest and last (yeah, right) release entitled History Makers: Greatest Hits from Delirious?, the seminal worship rock band that changed the face of the current Christian scene and music in churches around the globe.
In this Limited Edition, seemingly every song a fan would say “absolutely belongs” finds itself included – from well-known worship anthems to some of the band’s blistering rock tracks. But therein lies the problem. The price tag on this is a whopper in today’s media market, even with the additional booklet and DVD, and the person who would want to get ahold of a project like this is the same one who already has most of the CDs in their collection.
The proper response to celebrate Delirious?’s wonderful career is to spice it up. Where are the outtakes, rarities, b-sides and live tracks? For a band with such a rare live presence, a few concert tracks of rock anthems like “History Maker,” “Take Me Away” and “Paint the Town” would have made a lot of sense. Or how about a stripped down worship set with some of the best modern worship tunes around – songs like “My Glorious,” “Majesty,” “What A Friend I’ve Found” and “Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?”
Instead, these are simply the studio takes copied and pasted onto yet another disc for the fans to purchase. Perhaps this is a good strategy come holiday time when Aunt Susan, who heard you like Delirious?, finds this made-too-easy collection and can finish her shopping quickly.
For those without key Delirious? releases – like those later to the party in the band’s discography – then this is actually a fine release. From beginning to end, all albums are well represented and I, for one, couldn’t think of a single song that made me say, “How could you not include this?” But mostly I’d imagine fans will have to disregard this for its inability to offer anything truly new than a playlist or mixtape – all of which can be done by clicking a button or two in iTunes.
