Scott Krippayne

He might be known for the song “I’m Not Cool”, but Scott Krippayne has moved way past fluffy pop tunes. He also got a big break last year with his song “This is My Now”, which was recorded by American Idol’s Jordin Sparks, and served as the Idol Finale anthem. His recent success would be reason enough for him to crank out a set of innovative radio singles, but Krippayne takes the opposite road, coolly releasing a set of worship songs that are chock full of substance, yet easily delivered and enjoyable.

Opener “It is Good” could find a home in any church worship setting, with a simple chorus line and “clap-able” rhythm. “Put Your Hands Together” is a piano driven track, featuring his signature bounding piano lead. “Captured” is the third of a winning opening trio, with its earthy, organic sound, backed by percussion and a perfected vocal chorus. Krippayne keeps the trend going with “Steadfast Love”, whose chorus declares, “A steadfast love surrounds the ones who trust in the Lord”.

A delicate piano carries lovely ballad “You are Here”, which is soothing and compelling. “Light that Shines” is an upbeat song, but the vocal gets a little redundant towards the conclusion. “Fifty One”, “In the Calm”, and “None Other than the Lamb” are subtle songs that, while not fantastic, still are calm and unpretentious. Krippayne rounds out this authentic album with a surprise re-recording of his smash hit “This is My Now”, and his vocal has never sound better. Though Sparks made it a hit, Krippayne will easily introduce the pop anthem to his own audience through this album. It feels a little out of place on this worship album, but it is so good, it doesn’t really matter. Again, no lyrical groundbreaking content on “Authentic Worship”, but its forgivable.

This album is perfect for driving in the car, or, as I used it, for personal worship time (also would make a great accompaniment to devotions, or background music in the home). Is it completely innovative? No. You will not find this album on any “best of” collections, or packed with accolades. It probably won’t win over every adjunct Tomlin/Crowder/Redman fan, but I get the feeling that Krippayne really won’t care…after all, he’s “not cool”. This is raw, authentic, and simple worship at its best.
