When I think about songwriting, it has been one of the most humbling experiences of my life. People ask “How do you write a song?” and my answer is always, “I have no idea. If I knew I would sit down and write you a song right now!” I have found that there are things I can do to provide a good writing environment or to stir my creativity but I am learning that inspiration ultimately comes from God. And like most blessings from God, they come in His timing, not my own.
They are also usually based on His choice of subject matter as well. I might want to write a song about all the exciting things I’ve been busy doing for God, yet He may stir in my soul lyrics about resting and being still. Better yet, I may begin writing/venting about how bad my day has been but He turns it around to talk about how bad my attitude has been. All of this to say that songs are from God. Sometimes they are meant only for my ears to hear. Sometimes God uses them to minister to others. My main role is to allow God to speak through me, by studying His Word and finding the best way to present His truths with creative accompaniment. And this is a role that can be both humbling and exhilarating at the same time; but I wouldn’t trade this process for anything.
Laura Story, a talented songwriter known for penning hit worship songs such as “Indescribable” and "Mighty to Save," recently unveiled her national debut release with INO Records’ entitled "Great God Who Saves." Enduring trials when her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Story found strength in God, recognizing His unbelievable grace, and wanted to express it to the world. The result is melodic, piano-driven worship imbued with the peace and joy that comes only on the heels of suffering. For more info, check out: www.laurastorymusic.com.
