The problem with 100 calorie packs is that it is just as easy to open another pack as it is to eat the first one. They are like potato chips, any brand; it is nearly impossible to eat just one. I don’t buy 100 calorie packs for this reason, but I thoroughly enjoy them on airplanes and find myself asking my husband, “Are you going to eat that?”.
We were at a friend’s house yesterday and they were telling us about their 17-month-olds relationship with the dishwasher. It is a “no hands” item, meaning he cannot touch the dishwasher. However, he’ll sit there watching it intently opening and closing his hands and every once in awhile he’ll reach out quickly and touch it like a hot stove. Of course, this will lead to being scolded and he’ll end up back where he started, trying to control the urge to touch. This made us all laugh and I marveled at how early our rebellious nature shows it’s face.
Another friend of mine who has two dogs told me that she’ll give the treat intended for dog A to dog B, and visa versa, knowing that they will take each others treat the minute she gives them away!
It is like this force that follows us all around, we cannot help but want what our neighbor has, and we cannot help doing exactly the opposite of what we are told.
I just know that I have no patience or grace on my own. My first instincts are to run, hide, steal and lie to get my way. To have control. Giving me a 100 calorie pack is not enough, I need supernatural power to keep me from taking more than my share. And standing next to the dishwasher will not make anything easier for me, I need help to learn to walk away so I’m not even tempted to reach out my hands.
How interesting that we begin this battle before we even turn a year old, and we continue it our whole lives on earth. We truly do need a Savior!
