Uncertain Times

You can’t open a newspaper or turn on the television without seeing a story about the financial crisis going on in the world today. I must admit that it is a bit unsettling and scary. It is easy to get caught up in all the panic and craziness if I am not careful. Looking ahead to the future and trying to determine what might happen I think is what gets everyone in an uproar. People spend hours upon hours and thousands of dollars in order to give us their best educated guess.

Actually, there is no way to know for sure what is going to happen with the economy, or with anything for that matter. Personally for me, I find that when I start getting a little anxious about my financial future, I look back instead of forward. I look back to all the many times God has shown up in my life as Jehovah-Jireh, my provider. There was the time I wanted to give $100 to my church’s building fund (but didn’t have even have $1 to spare) when an unlikely person suddenly gave me $100. Then there was the time my very old hand-me-down washer and dryer gave out so I needed a new one. I was all prepared to go buy one the next day, when I was driving down a neighborhood road and passed a shiny, fairly new washer and dryer with a sign that read “FREE – TO ANYONE WHO WILL TAKE IT”. That washer and dryer is in my home to this day and works like a charm.

There are many more stories that I could share and I am certain there are many times when God provided for me and I didn’t even know it. In scripture, we are reminded time and time again to not put our faith in money and other things of this world, for they are uncertain and changing as the wind. Although this current financial crisis is troubling from one perspective, it also is a wake up call that my hope is not in things of this world. My hope is in Jehovah-Jireh. He is the One who sees yesterday, today and tomorrow and is not surprised by anything. Things may get worse, things may get better, but the one thing I am certain of is that God is in control and He will provide for me whatever may come.
